Visitors to Beef Expo 2008 at Perth Agricultural Centre on Wednesday, May 21, will have the opportunity of competing for a total of £2500 in prize money in the young farmers’ and open stock judging competitions.

The winner of the senior section of the young farmers’ stock judging will receive the coveted Duke of Northumberland Perpetual Trophy and a cash prize of £500 sponsored by Norbrook Laboratories (GB) Ltd while the winner of the open competition, sponsored by Yara UK Ltd, will receive the Yara Perpetual Trophy and a cash prize of £400.

The Beef Expo 2008 Rose Bowl and cash prize of £200 donated by the Aberdeen-Angus Cattle Society will be presented to the winner of the young farmers’ junior competition.

Members of young farmers clubs in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland will be eligible to compete on production of their membership card with the senior competition being open to members aged 19 to 26 years of age and the junior competition to members aged 18 years and under. Young farmers taking part in the YFC stockjudging are ineligible to compete in the open competition.

In addition to the top awards, prize money of £150 for second place, £100 for third, £75 for fourth, £50 for fifth and £25 for sixth will be awarded in both sections of the young farmers’ competition as a result of generous sponsorship from the British Charolais Cattle Society, British Blue Cattle Society, The Farmers Mart, British Simmental Cattle Society and Frank R Marshall and Co, Auctioneers, Chelford.

Prize money in the open competition will include £300 for the runner-up, £200 for third place and £100 for fourth, plus Yara promotional merchandise for fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth place.

“We are greatly indebted to all our sponsors who have enabled us to offer really attractive prize money in each of the competitions which should ensure an excellent entry,” said Beef Expo organiser, Euan Emslie.

The entry fee for the competitions is £1 and competitors will have between 9.00am and 12.30pm to complete the judging of the five classes of Aberdeen-Angus steers, Charolais bulls and heifers, Luing heifers and Simmental heifers.

The official judge will be John McLaren, Wester Keillour, Methven, Perth.
