Butchery CompetitionThe English Farm Shop Beef Butchery Competition, organised by EBLEX and open to owners, managers and butchers from farm shops, attracted a great deal of interest. Winner was John Brereton of Ludlow Food Centre with Stuart Cove, Weeton’s in second place and Robert Nicholson, Canon Hall Farms, claiming third spot. National Farm Shop Beef Butchery Competition at Beef Expo 200918th March 2009 A novel butchery competition for farm shop owners, managers and butchers will be a new feature of this year’s national beef event, Beef Expo 2009, to be held at the Three Counties Showground, Malvern, Worcester, on Thursday, May 21. Beef Expo 2009 is organised by the National Beef Association (NBA) and is supported by Lloyds TSB as major sponsor. The National Farm Shop Beef Butchery Competition is being organised by EBLEX and will be open to farm shops selling English beef. The competition is being sponsored by Weddel Swift, who have agreed to supply the beef, while Lucas Ingredients will provide a variety of marinades and seasoning to enable competitors to add value to cuts. Lucas Ingredients are also kindly offering three trophies for the best butchery, best display and overall champion. “This new competition will add a further dimension to Beef Expo 2009,” said EBLEX regional manager, Clive Brown. “More and more farm shops are introducing fresh meat counters and the competition is designed to encourage high standards of butchery and presentation.” Competitors will be allocated a preparation and display area and will be allowed one hour to prepare and display a variety of cuts. Each competitor will be provided with one thick flank and a primal cut of fore-quarter English beef and will be required to put on a display consisting of at least eight different cuts and products. Competitors will also be required to produce four beef burgers, one of which will be cooked as part of the judging process. “This will be a fun competition which will enable farm shop owners, managers and butchers to display their skills in beef butchery and display,” said Mr Brown. Competitors must provide their own tools and protective clothing, including a stab-proof protective apron and glove, and will be allowed 10 minutes before the start of the competition to set up and 10 minutes clear up time at the end. The competition will take place between 10.00am and 3.00pm and the presentation of trophies and certificates at 4.00pm. “I am sure this new competition will attract a great deal of interest from farm shops and will be a very worthwhile addition to the Beef Expo 2009 programme,” said Clive Roads, chairman of the local committee which is organising Beef Expo on behalf of the NBA. “We are greatly indebted to EBLEX for organising the competition and to Weddel Swift and Lucas Ingredients for their generous sponsorship.” The competition is open to farm shop owners, managers and butchers aged 18 years and over and the closing date for entries is Thursday, May 7. Entry is free but a £50 deposit, refundable on the day of the competition, is required. Entry forms should be returned by Thursday, May 7, together with the appropriate remittance, to Jackie Hawkes, EBLEX Ltd, PO Box 44, Winterhill House, Snowdon Drive, Milton Keynes, MK6 1AX.
