Mr McGregor said it was one of the best shows of cattle he had ever judged with quality in every class.
“In many cases, good cattle were standing fourth or fifth because of the quality at the top of the classes,” he said.
The heifer classes were particularly strong and produced the supreme champion, Tip Top, a 512kg black Limousin cross from Jonathan Timm, TWH Farming, Leeds. The heifer, bought from breeder, John White, for £2300 at Middleton-on-Teesdale for Mr Timm as a 21st birthday present, was champion at Otley Show the previous week-end.
The reserve champion was also a black Limousin cross heifer, Poker Face, shown by 11 year old Charlotte Alford, daughter of Michael and Melanie Alford, Foxhill Farm, Blackborough, Cullompton, Devon. This 548k heifer, sired by Attila, was bred by Christopher Dick, Stirling, and was commercial cattle champion at Devon County Show as well as calf champion at both the England and Welsh Winter Fairs last December.
Steer champion was Cawr, a home-bred black Limousin cross which tipped the scales at 606kg, from Geriant and Elfyn Jones, Ty Gwyn, Llantrisant, Holyhead, Anglesey. This one was bred by Messrs Edwards, Llanrwst, and was purchased privately after winning the championship at the Welsh Winter Fair last year.
Reserve was another black Limousin, Super Trouper, a 479kg steer by Shire Apollo, from Andrew Richardson and Jennifer Hyslop, Low Bank End Farm, Appleby, Cumbria. Bred by John Smith-Jackson, Haltwhistle, Northumberland, this steer was baby beef champion at Countryside Live at Harrogate last year purchased at Leyburn Mart for £4200. He is a full brother to the 2009 Royal Show beef cattle champion, Mamma Mia.

Winner of the first Farmers Guardian/National Beef Association Beef Stockman of the Future Award, announced at Beef Expo, was 33 year old Nick Davies, Llandrindod Wells, Powys. Runner up was James Evans (33), Lydbury North, Shropshire, with third place going to James Scott (36), Fearn, Tain, Ross-shire.
The award for the best breed society stand was won by the Charolais breed with Galloway reserve and Limousin in third place.

Next year’s national beef event, Beef Expo 2011, will be held at Newark Showground in Nottinghamshire on Thursday, May 26.
The annual showcase event for the UK beef industry, organised by the National Beef Association, is growing in stature every year and now requires more exhibition space to accommodate an expanding range of livestock demonstrations, educational/advisory exhibits, seminars and trade stands. [more]
