The Theme adopted for this year’s event “Beef – Our Future Together” comes at a time when the beef industry is enjoying a long overdue revival of fortunes with fin - ished prime stock selling at a 15 year high since the ravages of BSE in the mid 1990’s and the obvious knock on effect of lifting breeding stock, store and calf prices boosting returns to the suckler producer and dairy farmer with beef crosses.
Any hint of euphoria is always tempered with caution having seen how the industry has been pole-axed in the past by unforeseen problems. Although returns appear to be gaining momentum the increasing costs of inputs always affects the overall margins.
This year’s event will be concentrating on increasing those margins by efficient use of products, systems and “tools of the trade” available to suit a wide and varying range of finishing and rearing systems in operation throughout Northern Ireland.
Almost 80 trade stands, covering all aspects of beef farmer’s requirements, together with 14 Beef Breed Societies / Demonstrations, will provide visitors with a comprehensive insight to rearing systems, handling, feeding, veterinary items and marketing choices available to the modern beef producer. This coupled to a com pre - hensive seminar programme and “Question Time” panel covering topical matters should be another great attraction.
A massive amount of preparation and organising has gone into the event and I, on behalf of the local organising committee would like to take this opportunity to record our sincere thanks to all the sponsors, breed societies, trade stand holders and individuals who have made the 2010 NBA NI Beef Expo possible. Thanks also to the numerous participants at all levels who combine to make up what we hope will be an exciting event.
The National Beef Association - Northern Ireland Council is working hard to get a better deal for beef farmers, whether that be with supermarkets, beef proc - essors and DARD to name a few. If you are not already a member of the association, I would strongly consider visiting the NBA stand (No 26) at the event and joining as a member or at least find out what the council is doing on your behalf.
On a final note, I would like to thank the organising committee and the National Beef Association NI Council for all the work they have done in the preparation of this event.
We very much hope that everyone visiting this year’s event will find something to interest them and ultimately help them make future decisions.
