Seminar Speaker ProfilesTechnical SeminarsWilliam Johnston, Beef and Sheep Adviser at CAFRE, based in Enniskillen will be speaking on the Management of the Suckler Herd to Optimise Fertility. William was involved in the development of the CAFRE Suckler Herd Fertility Challenge and will outline the key points relating to feeding, breeding and general herd management which affect herd fertility. His presentation will include results from over 150 herds who have participated in the Suckler Herd Fertility Challenge over the past two years. Maria Guelbenzu, Veterinary Research Officer, AFBI, Veterinary Sciences Division will outline the key requirements of the AFBI Cattle Health Scheme and will summarize the diseases it covers. Maria will also highlight the main benefits to participating herds which will be improved animal health and welfare, leading to increased productivity in suckler herd. William Haire, cattle breeder and 2009 Nuffield Farming Scholar will be speaking on the topic Unleashing your herds genetic potential, focusing on breeding programme design and the elements that contribute to its success. The presentation will also cover EBV’s, Gene markers, as well as other management and decision making tools. Alistair Carson, Project Leader, Sustainable Livestock Systems, AFBI Hillsborough will outline key findings from the Bovine Information System (BovIS) which is a single unified beef phenotypic database using data from APHIS and meat plants. Alistair will outline how this database can provide information for beef producers to direct decisions regarding breeding and management. Dr Denise Lowe, Beef and Sheep Technologist at CAFRE, Greenmount campus will be talking on Beef from Grass with particular emphasis on use of grass clover swards. Denise co-ordinates the three farmer-driven Grass Clover Monitor Farm Groups in N. Ireland and she will outline their function. Grassland management at the Abbey Farm at Greenmount Campus will also be discussed. Dr Lynne Dawson, Project Leader, Sustainable Beef Systems, AFBI Hillsborough will be speaking on the Carbon Footprint of beef production. Lynne will outline mechanisms by which carbon footprint can be reduced with particular reference to methane from livestock and manure management and nitrous oxide from fertilisers.
Marketing SeminarsConall Donnelly, Economist at the Livestock and Meat Commission for Northern Ireland , will be talking on the prospects for the red meat market in 2010. He will brief delegates on European and UK trends as well as providing some information on International trends forecast for 2010 Phelim O’Neill, Chief Executive of the Northern Ireland Meat Exporters Association (NIMEA), will discuss the specifications of cattle that are required by the slaughter industry in Northern Ireland , why they are needed and how the specification arrangements introduced in November 2009 are settling in. Eamon Kelly is Business Development Officer with Aberdeen Angus Quality Beef Ltd (AAQB). Eamon will be discussing AAQB's supply chain partnership, which includes its members - Foyle Food Group and Tesco NI Seamus Scallan is a partner in the Wicklow Cattle Company Ltd, a family run business specializing in the supply of livestock to farms throughout Ireland and in the export of weanlings and calves to UK , Holland , Spain and Italy . Seamus will discuss live export market opportunities, the type of animal and standards of animal husbandry necessary for export and the logistics involved in the trade. David Wright from DARD Quality Assurance Branch will be outlining the requirements for Beef Carcase Classification by Video Image Analysis (VIA), sometimes referred to as Mechanical Grading, what will be needed for the up-coming Machine Certification Test, and how the EC Control Committee will continue to monitor the performance of the machine Business Seminars Mairead O'Grady, MVB MRCVS will be talking about BVD control in suckler herds. She worked as a veterinary practitioner in a mixed practice in Northern Ireland for 8 years where the predominant focus was beef farming. She is Ruminant Technical Advisor for Intervet Schering Plough Animal Health since 2009. Paul McHenry, Beef and Sheep Business Technologist at CAFRE, Greenmount Campus will be talking on Benchmarking and how it can help to improve the profitability of your farm business. Paul is responsible for managing the benchmarking system for beef and sheep farmers in Northern Ireland. Roger Dallas, partner at Irwin Donaghey Stockman LLP, Chartered Accountants will be speaking on the tax implications of capital expenditure and will highlight inheritance tax and capital gains tax issues in respect of land ownership. Stuart Boothman, Cogent Breeding Ltd will be talking about getting the best results from using Artificial Insemination - " inception to conception ". Formed by the Duke Of Westminster in 1998 Cogent has established itself as a Global Dairy and Beef AI company, offering reproductive solutions to farmers and breeders. Pioneers of Sexed semen, the company has grown year on year and now exports to 42 countries worldwide. A Custom Collection service allows breeders to send their own bulls to the Cogent stud for semen Mark McLean, a Senior Agricultural Economist from Policy and Economics Division in DARD will be speaking on the subject of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) post 2013. In particular he will outline the main issues that will be considered such as the size of the CAP budget and the future of Single Farm Payment. Justin McCarthy, is Chief Livestock Editor with the Irish Farmers Journal and will be talking about business challenges affecting the beef farmer. His main Interests are profitable production of beef from the suckler herd and carrying out analysis of world beef production trends. After gaining an Honours Degree in Agricultural Science he gained experience in NZ and has worked in the meat processing sector in England and with Teagasc, the Irish Advisory Service in Athenry on the Teagasc/Dawn Meats beef programme. Fergal Morris, MVB MRCVS will be talking about control of bovine respiratory disease. He worked in Ireland and the UK in both beef and dairy practice prior to joining Intervet Schering Plough Animal Health where his role is Ruminant Business Director.
